Hello,

Thanks for your post.

I would like to confirm my understanding first. Do you have two win2k
domains now and want to migrate from one domain to the other? Or do you
simply want to join the new DC to the existing domain?

According to your message, I assume that you have joined the new DC to the
existing domain. If this is the situation, you don't need migration at all.

To achieve your goal, you can follow the steps below. However, the process
is a little complicated. Because it is not common to change the name of a
DC.

Also, the only way to rename a domain controller in Windows 2000 is to
demote the server to a member server, rename the server, and then repromote
the server to be a domain controller. If the customer does not have a
replica DC, then all Active Directory information, user accounts, and
machine accounts will be lost.

More details are in the following article.

To clarify the process, let us name the current DC ComA, and the new DC
ComB. Our goal is to replace ComA.

Replacing the current DC
======================

  1. Install AD-integrated DNS on ComB, this process will auto replicate
DNS.

  2. Move Global Catalog to ComB.

  3. Switch FSMO Roles to ComB.

Using Ntdsutil.exe to seize or transfer FSMO roles to ad domain controller

  4. Run to test the domain for a period.

  5. Demote ComA to member server and then rename it. Let us say rename
ComA to ComC.

Use dcpromo to achieve the goal.

  6. Promote ComC to be an additional DC in the domain.

Use dcpromo to achieve the goal.

  7. Move Global Catalog to ComC.

  8. Switch FSMO Roles to ComC.

  9. Run to test the domain for a period.

  10. Demote ComB to member server and then rename it to ComA.

  11. Promote ComA to be an additional DC in the domain.

  12. Transfer the files from ComC(the former DC) to ComA(the new DC).

Things will be easier if you have another computer to hold the GC and FSMO
roles when ComA and ComB are changing names.

Hope this helps. If you have any further questions don't hesitate to get in
touch!

Best regards,

Frances He
