It seems that LDIFDE can just work with the objects and not the OU
structure, meaning it does not look like it can create OUs. I am
pretty familiar with the ADSI and did not find a way to create OUs with
that either. Are you suggesting that an export file should be created
for each OU containing the objects, and then I would create the OUs
manually and import the objects? Or can I export the entire structure
into one file, create the OU structure in the new domain and then
import the objects?
Let me clarify what I'm trying to accomplish. We have two separate
single tier forests (meaning no sub domains). Now I would like to make
one domain a sub-domain of the other. There are two reasons: One is
we're going to be adding a new domain for our primary schools and I
want accounts to be able to flow into secondary and simplify
management, the other is that we're going to be deploying exchange
and I want to simplify account management. I suppose for exchange I
could you the ad connector to connect to the multiple domains. I
don't think any ou's would conflict in my case, but I understand
the logic behind it.
Thanks for your help, I didn't realize a command line tool existed
for operating on objects in the directory. I automated our user
account creation with ADSI and it works very well, but might have been
easier with command line tools.
ps- I asked for a quote for migration manager, although we're a
school district in PA and the budget will be tight. I just looked at
the product and I didn't see that it migrated the OU structure.
Thanks you again,
Andy
