Its required for AD. When you configure the first domain controller
(dcpromo) it will complain that there isn't a windows DNS server and it will
ask you to configure one. I'd suggest letting it configure DNS for you, then
after you reboot, go into the DNS mmc, change the DNS zone from "active
directroy intregrate" to "plain text" (can't remember the exact choose, but
its the one that stores the DNS info in text files on the DNS server). Once
you do that, find the DNS text files on your NOvell DNS server and open then
in a text editor. Copy and paste the records into the zone files on the
windows server (most of the time DNS zone files have the same format across
platforms, I'm not that sure of Novell's but most BIND programs do.). If
they are the same format, just append the novell info to the windows DNS
files. Restart DNS and make query DNS to see if the records are there.
(Make a backup of the windows DNS files before you change then just in case
you need to revert to the orginal, it might be a good idea to do this on a
test server anyway so you are famuliar with the process). If the above is
sucessful, just down the novell DNS server, add its IP address to the W2k3
server and then configure DNS on the windows server to just listen on that IP
address. DHCP may be a different story. I would jsut set up the pools the
same way on the windows servers as they are on the novell server (including
any reservations and particular settings, like DNS server names, routers,
etc). You don't need to worry about transfering the IP address of the novell
dhcp server to the windows server, just make sure only one DHCP server is
running in each of your network segments (subnet's).
