    Hello,

    Thank you for your post.

Generally speaking, it's okay to rename the domain in a Windows Server 2003
forest that has a forest functional level of Windows Server 2003. For more
inforamtion, take a look at the following URL:
    http://www.microsoft.com/resources/documentation/WindowsServ/2003/all/techre
    f/en-us/Default.asp?url=/Resources/Documentation/windowsserv/2003/all/techre
    f/en-us/W2K3TR_ad_ium_over.asp
    (See the "Domain Rename" part)

For detail steps to do the domain rename, refer to the KB:
    http://www.microsoft.com/windowsserver2003/downloads/domainrename.mspx

But, I am a little confused for the inquiry "I was planning on unplugging
my current NT 4.0 DC and all NT member servers then changing the new 2003
DC to the domain the 4.0 box was running under?" If you want to replace all
the NT4 DCs in the domain, please perform the followings.

    a. Refer to the following URL to upgrade the new computer to a 2003 DC in
    the NT4 domain:
326209 How To Upgrade a Windows NT 4.0-Based PDC to a Windows Server
    2003-Based
    http://support.microsoft.com/?id=326209

    b. And then change the function level and remove the all the Nt4 DCs.
It is not necessary for you to use ADMT at all and no need to change the
    domain name.

I hope this helps. If you have any questions or concerns, please do not
hesitate to let me know. I am happy to be of further assistance. Thank you
    for your time and cooperation!

    Sincerely,
    Carsyn Gu

    | My current DC is 4.0 I have a brand new box for the 2003 server to be
    | installed on. I installed 2003 Standard edition on it and running it
    under a
    | new domain name. I installed ADMT, created the proper trusts between the
    4.0
    | box and 2003 box. The ADMT requires the 2003 to be running in the forest
    | functional level of Windows server 2003 level. That tool brings over the
    | ACL's, users, permissions etc. I was planning on unplugging my current
    NT
    | 4.0 DC and all NT member servers then changing the new 2003 DC to the
    domain
    | the 4.0 box was running under? Is this possible? I know the Exchange
    5.5
    | needs to be addressed as well but before I continue in my test
    environment I
    | wanted to make sure I can change my domain name on my new 2003 DC....?
