We have a pretty small network that had a NT4 PDC and about 30 client
stations running 2k and XP.
To perform the 2k AD upgrade, I bought a server and installed NT4.
I added it to the domain COMPANY as a BDC successfully.
I installed the service pack 6 on the new machine.
I synchronized the new BDC with the PDC successfully.
I promoted the BDC to PDC and removed the old domain controller from the
network.

I now have my new server running NT4 as the PDC of COMPANY domain.
I put in my Windows 2000 server CD and choose the upgrade option.
During the upgrade, Active Directory and DNS services are installed.
For the DNS name for the network, I put in COMANYCORPORATE.COM
The upgrade seemed to proceed smoothly and without a problem on this
machine.
After the machine reboots, I login and verify that all of the users, groups,
and machines exist in AD.

Now the problem is when I try to login from a client machine, the login
process takes a very long time and I receive an error in the Application log
on the client that says:
Event ID 1054
Source: Userenv
User: NT AUTHORITY\SYSTEM
Description: Windows cannot obtain the domain controller name for your
computer network. (The specified domain either does not exist or could not
be contacted. )> Group Policy processing aborted.
