Hello Todd,

Thank you for your post.

High CPU utilization on Spooler service could be caused by different
factors. For example, printer drivers, language monitor, port monitor, or
processes running in the background.

I would like to suggest that we perform a Clean Boot first. A Clean Boot
will allow us to isolate any programs that are loading at startup that may
be causing a conflict with other drivers or programs that are installed in
the system.

1) Run MSCONFIG.EXE.

2) In the Services tab, click "Hide All Microsoft Services" and click
"Disable All".

3) In the Startup tab, click "Disable All". Click OK. (This will
temporarily prevent third-party programs from running automatically during
start-up.)

4) Restart the computer. Does the problem still persist?

If the problem does not occur, it indicates that the problem is related to
one application or service we have disabled. You can use the MSCONFIG tool
again to re-enable the disabled item one by one to find out the culprit.

If the problem still persists after performing the above steps, it is
needed to collect several DUMP files and debugging the spooler service to
find the culprit. Unfortunatelly, debugging is beyond what we can do in the
newsgroups. Therefore, we suggest that you speak directly with a Microsoft
Support Professional so that the Service process can be analyzed.

To obtain the phone numbers for specific technology request please take a
look at the web site listed below.
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=fh;EN-US;PHONENUMBERS

If you are outside the US please see http://support.microsoft.com for
regional support phone numbers.

I hope the problem can be resolved soon. Thanks and have a great day!

Regards,
Joe Wu

|I've migrated all our print queues from NT 4 SP6a to
|Windows 2003 server using the printmig utility.
|Everything went well and all print queues are working.
|One problem though is the spooler is consuming 50% of the
|cpu and above consistently with no load on it. Stop and
|starting the spooler service drops the CPU down to
|nothing. When I start, CPU slowly returns to 50% usage
|within 5 minutes with the spooler being the process that
|cosnumes it. I've copied over many older legacy drivers
|and have shut off Kernmal mode protection in order to
|support these drivers. I do supsect that possibly a
|driver may be causing the problem but not sure how to
|analyse this problem in more detail. Has anyone seen
|this and if so what resolution did you use. Any
|suggestions would appreciated. Thanks
