Hi people,

I am about to emabark upon a test run of my migration, I have notes, as I
have been messing with all aspects, but as yet havent documented the
stages...not a job im looking forward to, prefer to do the testing,
however Im aware of how important documentation is...

My question is as follows (I wil give a shortish concise method) if anyone
has any tips or alarm bells for what Im going to do please let me
know...:o)

btw Im going for the pristine environment, I have 2 servers earmarked and
built for AD, however these are on the current production NT4 domain,
these at present have 6 disks 2 mirrored and a raid5 over the 4 left..the
AD logs and DB will have to go on the mirrored first 2 (i.e the same
physical disk) as teh RAID5 is a file store. I know its not great however
the boxes are dual PIII 733's with 512MB Ram and we only have 140 users. I
may increase the RAM but apsrt from that my hands are tied by money
constraints

OK

1. I have 1 PDC and 1 BDC, firstly im going to add one more BDC and sync
all..and backup of course
2. I will take 1 BDC offline and leave in a corner with a hands off sign
all around
3. Then I going to *clear up* the users and groups, deleting old users,
groups etc on the old domain
4. I have a Server (off network at present) that I am going to install AD
onto..and design my OU structure (do i have to prep this with domain
and/or forest prep?)
5. I am going to add this server to my current domain
6. I am then going to use ADMT (firstly creatung the trusts required)(I
have a test network that I have used ADMT on) to migrate users and groups
across (using the group migration wizard that does both users and groups)
6a. I am then going to start migrating computers using the computer
migartion wizard. Will this replicate user profiles etc. at present user
profiles are local. also how does this approoach effect remote users
7. I am going to have the two domains runing side by side for a period of
time (this means I believe not only will I have a BDC sitting around in
case of disaster, I also have the option of telling people to use the old
domain if there are any problems) In fact I may just migrate certain users
who I know to be tech savvy to test in a poduction environment before
migrating everyone..
8. I am then going to (when everything seems to be ok) run DCpromo on the
2 *proper* servers that I have earmarked so I can copy AD to the correct
servers, I shall then transfer the FMSO roles from the *test* server..I
will then DCpromo and demote said server to a member and then take off
network completley.
9. Hopefully this should leave me and nice pristine 2003 AD domain

Im aware that nothing ever goes completley smoothly but as long as its
minor stuff thats OK...you can spend months (which I have) looking for
potential pitfalls etc but at the end of the day you've gotta go for it
and as long as you have the correct fallbacks then u should be ok

I have tested Exchange 5.5 on a test AD network and as long as the users
profile is copied then its fine, however im hoping that when i do a
*proper* migration with ADMT then this will do this for me (as long asi
set it up correctly) should i have any specific exchange problems
?...would I be right in thinking that you do need WINS for this (Exchange
upgrade is for another time)

Any thoughts or warnings etc will be most appreciated

Cheers
