Thanks for your posting here.

Yes, I think your plan should work.

Please make sure that the new domain user has full rights to the
"newusername" folder after you copy the original profile to new profile.
You can open the Properties of the folder to check the permissions.

In addition, you can also try a Windows 2000 Server Resource Kit tool,
"moveuser.exe" it will copy the user profile to another user account. You
can use the following command.

"moveuser DomainName\UserAAA DomainName\UserBBB "

You can run "moveuser /?" for the detailed command line syntax.
