Look for a resource kit utility called dommon.exe. This is great for
testing the state of your trusts.
You description does sound like there's a WINS entry missing on a domain
controller somewhere. It is likely to be missing on a domain controller of
the user's domain when they log into a workstation on a trusted domain.
Not sure about your deleted WINS entry. As far as static entries go, you
need both 1C and 1B entries, the 1B entry poinging to the PDC or domain
controller with the PDC emulator role and the 1C providing a list of all
domain controllers in the domain. Microsoft does not recommend using static
WINS entries, but that's not to say it doesn't work when correctly
configured.
Hope this helps
