| Hi everyone,
|
| I have a couple of questions about Microsoft's new licensing model in
| Windows 2003 Server. A few years ago we got a new Dell server and bought
a
| Windows 2000 Server license under the Open License Program. We also got
30+
| CAL's for all our workstations which we licensed in the per-seat mode in
| case we got another Windows 2000 Server down the road.
|
| We recently got another server (used) and put Windows 2003 Server 120-day
| Trial Edition on it. We like the fax server capability of Windows 2003
and
| so decided buy it. Now, upon calling Microsoft Canada I understand that I
| need to not only get a license for Windows 2003 Server but also 30 more
| CAL's because my old ones only are only good for connecting to my Windows
| 2000 Server. I further understand there is no upgrade path from Windows
| 2000 Server or it's CAL's to the new 2003 version. Something called
| "Software Assurance" is available which boils down to "pay now for a
product
| which may or may not exist and which you may or may not think is worth
| buying IF it even exists". Also, I need to now decided if I want my CAL's
| to be per-user or per-device and I have to decide this when I purchase
them.
|
| Questions:
|
| Why the complete lack of a reasonable upgrade path?
| Why this introduction of per-user and per-device CAL's?
| Why do XP clients now require a Terminal Service CAL when they didn't
under
| Windows 2000?
| Why do I need to buy CAL's for Windows XP Professional clients?
Considering
| that Windows XP Pro is considerably more expensive then Home edition The
| increased price of XP Pro should include a CAL for ALL versions of Windows
| Server (NT, 2000, 2003, whatever comes next).
|
| I find the whole concept of a CAL to be a little ridiculous to be honest
| with you. If I write a service that sends a text message to a user's cell
| phone when their Exchange alerts come due I would technically need a
Windows
| CAL and an Exchange CAL for every cell phone that received the text
message.
| Get real!
|
| Don't get me wrong, I like Microsoft's products but I feel like I am
getting
| nickel and dimmed to death.
|
| Cheers,
|
| Ken.
