Hello Janet,

Thank you for posting here.

1. You can only upgrade Windows NT Server 4.0 Enterprise Edition to Windows
Server 2003, Enterprise Edition.

For more information you may browse the following web site:
Supported Paths for Upgrading to Windows Server 2003 or to Windows Small
Business Server 2003
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;810613

2. You should configure DNS Server during upgrade.

3. Yes, you can set up the internal dns with domain.local and the AD root
as domain.local AD-integrated dynamic, then add my other dns zones
(non-dynamic).

4. During the upgrade process, many files are copied, deleted, and
replaced. This can cause the drive to become defragmented. For more

I hope the information I have provided you with proves helpful!
If you have any questions please do not hesitate to let me know. I am glad
to be of assistance.
Thanks and regards,
Alex Zhang

| Our current DNS is hosted by an outside ISP; we have also purchased
additional domain names for a future change. Our current plan is to do an
in-place upgrade from NT4 to Server2003. A few questions:

1. Current NT BDC that I plan to promote and then upgrade is Enterprise,
but I want to upgrade box to Server 2003 Standard, okay?

2. Do I configure DNS during upgrade process, or after upgrade by deleting
the ... root and starting my dns structure from scratch?

2. In setting up AD/DNS, with integrated AD zones, I read that split-brain
is the preferred way to go: So...

Let's say the domain I purchased and plan to use in the future is
domain.net (remember, different from the domain currently being used) -
both current and future to be hosted externally. Should I set up the
internal dns with domain.local and the AD root as domain.local
AD-integrated dynamic, then add my other dns zones (non-dynamic)?

If we make the switch down the road to using email, etc., of
myname@domain.net and change the MX record to point to the server running
email services (any flavor - Microsoft or Novell?), are we okay?

3. After upgrade, I read that it's a good idea to run the disk defragger
and defrag the pagefile and set registry file maximums? Is this true? Any
papers and tools from Microsoft to do this?

Thanks so much,
Janet
