Hello Sipa,
Thank you for your reply.
Based on your request, I suggest you to perform the following steps:
1. Set up the DNS on the Windows 2003 DC that you upgrade from PDC and
point to itself as the primary DNS server.
2. During the upgrade, name the internal DNS name different from Public DNS
name abc.com. (It is recommended to use a different domain name. For
example, abc.local or corp.abc.com.)
3. When you set up a new Windows 2003 DC and transfer the FSMO roles, set
up a new DNS server (AD integrated zone)
4. For Internet name resolution, configure forwarder on the new Windows
2003 DNS server for ISP DNS server or your public DNS server.
5. For the LNW domain, I am not sure if you need to resolve the name for
that zone. How do you configure on Windows 2000 server? If you configure
the secondary zone, you may configure the secondary zone for LNW domain on
new Windows 2003 DNS server again.

| Hi Alex,
Thank you for following up on me! Actually I'm still reading all these
posted knowledge but I still cant get a clear answer to my questions.
Again, I understand the process to upgrade my PDC to AD 2003 but I just
need to verify if I have to install a new DNS server on the new AD server
when I do the upgrade. This is my question, when I upgrade my PDC to AD
2003 do I install DNS server at the same time and point this DNS server as
the primary. What happen to my 2 existing internal DNS servers 2000 that I
have? Maybe I should try and give you a clear understand of my migration
process.
I'm planning to do an in-place upgrade from NT4 to AD 2003. This is my
network:
1 PDC - running just that and login scripts.
2 new Windows server 2003 as a member server for my 2 new Domain Controller.
2 BDC - running in-house applications.
2 Internal DNS servers (Pri. And Secondary) - running Windows 2000 server.
1 External DNS server - running Windows 2000 server.
10+ servers - NT4 and Windows 2000 servers running: DHCP, WINS, and etc...
1 Single label domain "ABC" - Want to use the DNS domain name same as our
public domain "abc.com" when I upgrade to AD. I know we're supposed to
keep it private from the public but I don't want to create problem/issue if
I don't need to.
Also, there is other domain "LNW" (which is in Louisiana) that we're
connected and we support them. Their environment is Windows 2000 AD. Just
to make sure after the upgrade to AD 2003 that I will still be able to
see/access to the domain.
My plan:
1)Do the in-place upgrade where I install a new NT4 with SP6a as BDC,
promote it to PDC and then upgrade it to Windows 2003 AD.
2)Take the original PDC offline for Rollback.
3)Name my DNS domain as abc.com (I wanted to be abc.local so it won't be
exposed to the Internet but I'm scared that I might mess it up).
4)After my AD is up and running, I will promote my Windows server 2003
member server to a DC and transfer all the roles to this server.
My questions:
1)Do I have to do worry about my existing Internal and External DNS
servers?
2)Do I install the DNS server on the AD DC when I'm upgrading the server?
3) If I install a new DNS server with when I upgrade to AD, what is going
to happen to my 2 existing DNS servers?
4) And when I dcpromo a fresh install of Widnows server 2003 to DC and
transfer all the FSMO roles, do I have to re-install DNS server on this
server because I'm planning to remote the upgrade DC and bring up 2 new
fresh install Windows server 2003 as a DC.
5)Do I have to do anything to keep our connection to LNW domain?
6)Is there anything else I have to do to make my migration/upgrade go
smoothly???
Please help...Alex!
Thank you,
Sipa
