Hello John,

Thank you for posting here.

In the Computer Migration Wizard, you can specify the types of objects for
which you want ADMT to translate security. You can select the following
object types:

Files and folders
Local groups
Printers
Registry
Shares
User profiles
User rights

In Windows NT 4.0, locally cached profiles are stored as a subfolder of the
%SystemRoot%\Profiles folder. In Windows 2003, if the installation is an
upgrade, the existing profile path continues to be used.

============
Regardless of whether the user logs on to a local account or an account
from a domain, if the %ProfilePath% folder does not contain a folder with
the name of the logged-on user (in this case "joesmith"), a folder with
that name is created and the path recorded in the registry along with the
Security Identifier (SID) of the user associated with the profile. The
folder created as a result would be:
Windows 2000 installation drive:\Documents and Settings\joesmith

If another account with the down-level name "JOESMITH" were to log on,
another folder would be created, but with the name of the local computer or
domain in which the user's account originates:

Windows 2000 installation drive:\Documents and Settings\joesmith
[NEWDOMAIN]

Or, if the user account was established on the local computer:
Windows 2000 installation drive:\Documents and Settings\joesmith [LOCALBOX]

If another "JOESMITH" account logging on to the same Windows 2000 computer
logs on from an identically named source (whether a domain or local
computer) and the SIDs of the two accounts are not the same (this could
occur if the user accounts were re-created and the user logged on to the
same computer), a new folder would be created with an extension denoting
how many times the profile experienced this exception. For example:
For the first user:
Windows 2000 installation drive:\Documents and Settings\joesmith
[NEWDOMAIN].000
For the second user:
Windows 2000 installation drive:\Documents and Settings\joesmith
[NEWDOMAIN].001
And so on.

| I am currently running through some tests before I perform the live
| upgrade. I have an NT4.0 domain that will be upgraded to Windows
| Server 2003 and Active Dir.
|
| Ok so I have upgraded NT 4 PDC to Windows server 2003. I have
| installed AD/DNS/WINS.. Everything there is fine.. My problem (and im
| not sure if it is a problem is with the client workstations.
|
| The clients login with a local profile, all of the client machines are
| XP so the profile is stored in C:\Document and Settings\ under the
| user login name.
|
| Once I performed the upgrade to AD on the servers and then logged off
| and logged back in on the workstations new local profiles were
| created. I used the same AD/DNS domain name as my previous domain when
| I did the upgrade. I did not add any subdomains to it. Before the
| upgrade the NT domain was called abcdomain.com after the upgrade in AD
| the domain name is abcdomain.com...
|
| However when users login the new profile is created under the name
| login.abcdomain.com -- The only thing I really had setup in the old
| profile on the test machines was Outlook. I did not have to
| reconfigure this for reason even though I think I am logging in with a
| new profile.
|
| After upgrading and then logging in as a client to AD domain for first
| time is the local profile copied into the new one which specifies the
| domain name?
|
| I would have prepared a little better for this before the upgrade but
| since it was an upgrade I assumed the client side would be seamless..
|
| SO are these new profiles that need to be configured individually? Is
| there a way to upgrade the old NT 4 local profiles to the new ones -
| Is it a point of copying everything to the new one once logged in as
| an administrator?
|
| I have about 50 XP workstations that will be effected by this when I
| do the upgrade.
|
| Any reponses are appreciated and links will be helpful too..
|
| Thanks,
|
| John
