Thank you for your reply.

You can not do that. You can not add the new 2003 server to the domain as a
DC and then upgrade. Because the first step in the upgrade process is to
upgrade the PDC to Windows Server 2003.

Thanks for the reply.

Here's some more specifics.
1) The current PDC will be retired
2) The current BDC will be formatted clean and have 2003 server installed
fresh.
3) The 2k server will be left in place as a member server.
4) The new 2003 server will be added to the network.

So my plan was as follows:
1) Simply unplug the PDC from the network after fully synching the domain.
2) Add the new 2003 server to the domain as a DC
3) Upgrade the BDC to 2003 server.
Does this make sense?
