| Hello Sipa,
|
| Thank you for your reply.
|
| Generally, we can try three methods to migrate DNS zones from NT to
| 2000/2003:
|
| Method 1. Zone Transfer:
|
| 1.1) Create a secondary zone on the target system for the zone on the NT
| server
|
| 1.2) Transfer the zone over to the target server
|
| 1.3) Change the secondary zone on the target server to a Standard Primary
| Zone
|
| Method 2. Upgrade the Windows NT Server to Windows 2000/2003 directly.
|
| Method 3. Copy the DNS zone:
|
| 3.1) Copy the DNS zone file (*.dns) from form the Windows NT DNS server
in
| the following location:
|
| %SystemRoot%\system32\DNS
|
| 3.2) Put the *.dns file in the %SystemRoot%\system32\DNS folder on
target
| server
|
| 3.3) Try to create a new primary zone by using the wizard. When you are
| asked if you want to crate a new zone file, please select the radio box
| "Use this existing file" and specify the file name.

| Also, we can use a third-party tool Secure Copy to migrate the folders
with
| NTFS and share permissions:

| | Thank you Alex! I guess I will have to move my 2 existing internal DNS
| servers data (running Windows 2000) to the new clean install Windows 2003
| member server that soon to be a DC server. So my next step is to install
| the DNS server on the Window server 2003 member server that soon to be a
DC
| or am I suppose to install DNS server on the TempDC (use for upgrading
AD)
| server which is a BDC and will be promote to PDC and then upgrade to AD
| 2003. Once the AD is up and running I will promote my Windows server
2003
| member server as DC and transfer all the roles. I hope this make sense!
| Please help!
