Hello Jeff,
Thank you for your post.
We must run the Adprep commands to update the schema in the existing forest
before prompting the new Windows Server 2003 domain controller.
Actually, if we try to promote the Windows Server replica DC without
running the Adprep commands, we will encounter the error message:
----------------------------------------
The operation failed because:
A Schema validation check failed.
The Active Directory Installation Wizard cannot continue because the forest
is not prepared for installing Windows Server 2003. Use the Adprep
command-line tool to prepare both the forest and the domain. Fore more
information about using Adprep see Active Directory Help.
"The version of the Active Directory Schema of the source forest is not
compatible with the version of the Active Directory on this computer."
----------------------------------------
ADPREP commands are to upgrade the existing Windows 2000 forest and domain
to ensure that they contain the additional objects, attributes and
permissions necessary to support the Windows Server 2003 Active Directory
environment.
They are well tested. Please do not worry.
As always, to ensure that everything works well, please perform a backup
first.
Generally speaking, "ADPREP /FORESTPREP" is a one-time operation performed
on the schema operation master (FSMO) of the forest. The FORESTPREP
operation must have successfully completed and replicated to the
infrastructure master of each domain before "ADPREP /DOMAINPREP" can be
executed in that domain.
To run "ADPREP /FORESTPREP", the user must be a member of the Schema
Admins, Domain Admins, and Enterprise Admins groups.
"ADPREP /DOMAINPREP" is a one-time operation run on the infrastructure
operation master domain controller of each domain in the forest being
upgraded.
To run "ADPREP /DOMAINPREP", the user must be a member of the Domain Admins
group of the domain in which you are running DOMAINPREP.
The following documents contain good information regarding these operations:

Please let me know if anything is unclear. Thanks, and have great day!

|I am planning do the upgrade the middle of next month.

|Question: Can I perform the /forestprep and /domainprep this far in
advance
