Hello Phil.,

Thank you for your post.

My name is Joe Wu, and it is my pleasure to work with you on this issue.

I would like to suggest that you do not use Windows NT dirvers on Windows
Server 2003 systems.

The device drivers are generally kernel-mode applications that have access
to system-wide memory. Incompatible kernel-mode drivers could cause serious
errors and it is better to not use these kinds of drivers, especially on
the server systems.

So I would like to suggest that you uninstall the sound card card driver
(or restore the system from the backup if it is available), and then
upgrade the hardware device (using a new sound card) as a thorough solution
in the long run.

I hope this helps. Thank you and have a nice day!

Regards,
Joe Wu

|Hi there !!
|
|I did my adprep /forestprep and domainprep on my domain ( 5 DCs) and
|everything is ok.
|
|I then upgraded my DC "root" (with the 5 FSMO roles) from Windows 2000
|Server SP4 to Windows 2003 Standard Edition.
|
|I opened my session, found out that my server had not found the proper
|drivers for an old sound card in my box. No more problem.
|The sound card was there for some specific softwares (not trivial use !) !
|The sound card is an "old" ISA Creative Labs AWE 64.
|I 've downloaded the latest available drivers (they were for Nt4) and
|managed to install the Snd16 and another part which were not initially
|found.
|I've had to manually set I/O resources. All were non-conflicting of
course.
|
|I rebooted the server which by the way is fitted with an "old" MSI 6163 Pro
|card and a PIII450.
|
|I did my Ctrl Alt del and while the O.S was opening the session, it
suddenly
|rebooted !
|
|I tried to restart it but same thing.
|I tried other modes, but to no avail !
|I finally had to boot with the recovery console mode and disable sound
|services.
|I could then reboot and open properly the session.
|The event manager and device manager show NO problem whatsoever !
|Except the sound card that I immediately disabled of course !
|
|HOWEVER (otherwise it would be nice !) I can no longer use "Ctrl Alt Del"
|key sequence in the session !
|I said "in the session" ! because strangely enough I can use the sequence
to
|open the session !
|Not only that but, I can no longer close the session, restart or stop the
PC
|!
|I can see the HDD led blinking as if it was about to do what i was asking
|for, but stop at that !
|
|Therefore, I can do nothing but doing a hard reset to reboot the PC when
|it's required !
|
|I had no specific problem whatsoever before with my Windows 2000 Server,
and
|didn't change any option in the motherboard BIOS !
|
|Does anybody have an idea or suggestion to solve this problem !?
|
|Thx in advance,
|
|Phil.
