Hello Anthony,

Thank you for your post.

Are you satisfied with the structure of the current Windows 2000 domain?

Actually, I think we do not need to create a new domain in based on the
current status. Althought ADMT can greatly simplify the operations, it is
recommended that we use upgrade method instead of migration, as upgrade is
more simple and we do not need to consider the users/local
computers/permissions migration.

You can add the Windows Server 2003 as a replica domain controller and then
perform the Exchange migration.

Please note that we need to extend the current Windows 2000 domain's schema
before promoting the new Windows Server 2003 domain controller. The
following Knowledge Base (KB) articles contain good information:

325379 How to Upgrade Windows 2000 Domain Controllers to Windows Server 2003
http://support.microsoft.com/?id=325379

How to use the adprep command at the command line
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/prodtechnol/windowsserver2003/proddocs/ents
erver/adprep.asp

278875 Cannot Promote a Windows Server 2003 Domain Controller into a
Windows
http://support.microsoft.com/?id=278875

Please pay more attention to the "Exchange 2000 in Windows 2000 Forests"
section in the above document.

Regarding the other questions about the Exchange part of the upgrade, I
would like to suggest that you submit a new post in our Exchange newsgroups:

microsoft.public.exchange.admin
microsoft.public.exchange2000.admin

By the way, I believe the following document is helpful:

Exchange 2003 Deployment Guide
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyId=77B6D819-C7B3-42D1-
8FBB-FE6339FFA1ED&displaylang=en

I believe you will get informative and detailed suggestions there.

If you have any questions or concerns on the operating system part of the
upgrade, please do not hesitate to let me know. I am standing by to help
you. Thank you for your time and cooperation!

Regards,
Joe Wu

|I am doing an upgrade at a site from win2k PDC to win3k
|PDC & exch2k to exch3k and I'm putting them both on new
|boxes. I was wondering what would be the best way of
|doing that. This is what I'm thinking. Install win3k as
|a BDC on the new box and (I'm not sure if I have to do
|this, since its a bdc) use the ADMT and migrate all the
|users and computer objects. Then promote the Server to
|the PDC and retire the other one. For Exchange I am going
|to install win3k and exch3k on the new box as a member
|server or BDC then use ExMerge to copy over the
|mailboxes. I think that should do it, but I'm not sure if
|I'm missing a step of if there is any easier way of doing
|it. If anyone knows or has some ideas I would really
|appreicate it. Thanks.
