Re: Unable to use "Policy Editor" in a Windows XP workstation

Dear Meinolf,

I get the following error message when I start the GPMC
"No mapping between account names and security IDs was done".

On the other hand, I believe that my machine is not a domain member though a user name of mine is created in AD.

Besides, I did install the GPMC with SP1

Thanks

Hello Patrick,

If your computer is domain member gpmc should work. What error message do you get when starting it?

Do you use this version:

Dear Meinolf,

The Network Administrator has already created all users in AD
(Replicate the name from existing NOS). When I invoke AD UC, I have
to Action --> Connect to Domain --> Enter Domain Name

Thanks

Hello Patrick,

So your computer isn't a domain member of the domain you try to
manage with gpmc? I assume with AD UC you use an authentication
option when opening it like:

runas /netonly /user:domain\userid "mmc dsa.msc
/server=dc.in.other.domain"

Or how do you use AD UC to connect to the domain?

Best regards

Dear Marcin and Lanwench,

We are in the middle of migrating our existing NOS to AD. And the
Network Administrator is on annual leave and I am a helpdesk staff.

My machine is still running a NOS other than Active Directory.
However, I am able to use the "Active Directory Users and Computers"
tool to manage AD. Does it mean that if my machine is not joined to
Domain, I am not able to use the "Group Policy Management Console" ?

Your advice is sought

Patrick,
do any of the conditions outlined in the KB 890737 apply in your
case? In
other words - are any of the following true?
- An account does not exist on domain member computers.
- A SAM account name differs from its domain account name.
- The client is running a Multilingual User Interface Pack (MUI)
that
uses
a different default language than the domain controller.
- A SAM account name was renamed on the client computers.
If so, you should be able to remediate any of them individually,
without relying on the hotfix...

I am new to Active Directory.

On my XP workstation, I have installed the Windows 2003
Administration Pack. In this way, I am able to use "Active
Directory Users and Computers".

Then I install "Group Policy Management Console". When I start
it, I get the error message "No mapping between account names and
security IDs was done".

I have searched the web and found that there is a Hot Fix (KB
890737) but it is only applies to Windows XP SP1 and SP2. As my
one is already with SP3, the hotfix cannot be applied.

Your advice is sought.

Patrick
