Re: Server 2003 as a DC - Active Directory dies???

Tech-Archive recommends: Fix windows errors by optimizing your registry

Hello Zac,

But if you are able to work you can add a second DC during that time(hopefully) and start thinking about kicking the problem machine out. So you keep AD/DNS/GC even if the machine dies forever.

A reboot doesn't fix the cause of the problem though.

Hello Zac,

You said after reboot you can work, so what?

Again, ANYTHING that requires Windows authentication (like running
those commands) won't work. I can't even log onto the machine to run
them anyway. And doing a "runas" from elsewhere in the domain won't
work, either (requires authentication).

I had already thought of throwing a VM onto one of the other servers
and letting it propagate as a second DC to rebuild the first one,
but I was curious if there was anyway to fix this one before
resorting to that?

Hello Zac,

Install ASAP a second DC/DNS/GC in the domain!!!

For troubleshooting run diagnostic tools dcdiag /v, netdiag /v and
post the output here.

I've got a Server 2003 Domain Controller (Only one in the domain)
of which it's like Active Directory mainly dies. Suddenly. Without
warning.

When this happens, here's what I observe:
1) The logon box (either local or RDP, doesn't matter) is gone.
Nothing to
CTL+ALT+DEL on, nothing. Just the gray Secure Desktop background.
2) Anything that requires Windows authentication (Shares, Outlook,
Programs,
etc) starts failing.
3) Anything that uses stand-alone authentication (I've got
third-party
chat
software that uses its own database) continues to function.
So again, it's almost like Active Directory takes a dive.
This happens very inconsistently (Enough so I think calling
Microsoft Support on this would be a waste, because I cannot
reproduce it at any time). I've gone three weeks with no issues,
and
then like today, it happened two times within 4 hours.
Only solution is to hard reset the server, which I hate to do.

Event Viewer has NOTHING in it. All of a sudden you just start
seeing "Authentication Failed" messages popping up from various
apps, but nothing consistent or nothing to suggest what's going
on.

Any ideas?
