I went to ASUS' site to see if there are any drivers for this board for
ASUS technical support says:
"Unfortunately as this is not a server board it does not support server OS directly. we do not have
any resources for that OS here . I would go to the chip manufacturers page and see if they have any
drivers for that OS itself. or search for boards that are server boards that have the same chipset.
Unfortunately vista like OS of the 64 bit nature use extreme driver signing practices that are not
easy to defeat as microsoft is trying to get the hardware to stricter standards so that the 32- 64
change over has less problems, the worst part is that this practice causes it to be harder to get
them running in situations like these. "
Notice the "the worst part is that this practice causes it to be harder to get them running in
situations like these".
Looking at your motherboard model at their website, apparently it appears to
be an overclockable gamer's board and not meant for the server operating
systems.
I am using it as a test machine. It supports Hyper-V.
I will switch to Windows 7 Ultimate when it is released and user VPC instead of Hyper-V. This
assumes that ASUS will supply Windows 7 drivers.
I think the 'worst' part is where they say that they are trying to defeat Microsoft's software signing implementations. All they have to do is follow the rules and create a driver that works under Windows 2008 and Windows 2003. Many other manufacturers do, so I really don't see why they don't. Does that make sense? So there's probably a reason why possibly Microsoft hasn't certified that specific board. It could possibly be a performance criteria, or something else, who knows.
If I may suggest, you can use an Intel based board, for most of them are supported for Windows server operating systems. I know they cost more, and I'm sure that you're working within a budget, as many of us are. Otherwise, wait a few more months for Windows 7, or use Vista or XP and run VPC to run Windows 2008 on this machine.
