When do I put in the PAE switch?

I have windows 2003 standard edition with 4GB ram. boot.ini has this

[boot loader]
timeout=30
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(2)\WINDOWS
[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(2)\WINDOWS="Windows Server 2003,
Standard" /noexecute=optout /fastdetect

problem is server alwasys freeezing up. Do I need /PAE or can I put

/3GB switch with /USERVA=3030?

I don't believe the /pae switch will help with freezing up. That's usually a
driver or an app causing it. Is Exchange installed? If so, have you run the
ExBPA? That will tell you exactly what you need. Otherwise, what's installed
on the machine?

I don't know what type of machine you have., but if the server is a
non-Intel CPU machine, the /pae won't work, nor if it is a 64 bit system. I
would suggest using the /USERVA=3030 and /3GB switches.

If you have 4gb of RAM, there is no real point to use the /pae, because it
is designed to physically address RAM above 4GB. This is because with 32bit
architecture, you can only count to up to 4GB. You can test that by putting
in 32 bits in the calculator as Binary, then change it to Decimal.
Therefore, how does the system access the RAM above it? PAE is the answer.
