Re: Cannot write to shared folder on W2K8 server

Hello AllenM,

I did some further testing and i can not reproduce your problem. Even with sharing the folders the different ways as described from Ace, the share exactly does what i configure based on the share/ntfs permissions. With share permissions on read i get the access denied, that's the only access denied i have.

Best regards

Hello AllenM,

Can you access the folder from the run line with
\\servername\foldername, \\servername.domain.com\foldername and
\\ipaddress\foldername ?

Better yet to help me better understand what you're saying tell me
this.............

I got a folder on a W2K8 Standard server. I need this folder to be
shared and accessed only by myself or the Domain Admins group for
which I am a member of always. I need to be able to access this
Share from a shortcut on other servers as well as my desktop.

1. What are the SHARE security settings?
2. what should the NTFS permisssions be?
Currently they are...........
1. SHARE Security / Everyone=FULL
2. NTFS Permissions / Domain Admins = FULL, SYSTEM=FULL

Hello AllenM,

Sorry but since 2003 the share permissions default is read-only. In
2008 the account that creates the share has FC and additional added
accounts/group are read-only by default.

SHARE security is Everyone=FULL. this has always been the standard
for NTFS Folder Sharing Security. NTFS permissions are also valid
with only SYSTEM and Administrators = FULL. No users allowed.

AllenM <NoEmail@xxxxxxxxxxx>, seeking assistance, posted the
following:
I have a shared folder on a Wondows 2008 Standard server. I've
checked and doubled checked Share security as well as NTFS
permissions and all is correct. My problem is even though I can
access this share I cannot write to it. I keep getting access
denied errors. I checked file sharing on the W2K8 server and it
is turned on. Anyone got any ideas as to why even as
Administrator or Domain Admin I cannot write to this shared
folder without being logged on locally?

You stated you checked the file sharing and it is turned on. Did
you check the Share Permissions? By default, Everyone = Read Only
through the share. I would suggest to change it to the following:

Remove Everyone
Add:
Domain Admins FC
Authenticated Users Change
