Re: Can't join Windows 2008 DCto Windows 2003 domain

Hello Ricky,

You have to insert the 2008 install disk to the 2003 domain controller and run on that one the adprep commands. The existing 2003 domain has to be prepared for 2008, not the 2008 server.

Also you said your domain is named TEST. This is a single label domain name which you should never use. It results in lot's of problems. Choose always a form like TEST.LOCAL or TEST.LOC or similar. Do not use intenral a domain name you will get from your ISP, to avoid having TEST.COM (ISP) and TEST.COM in your internal network. Internal better have another one like TEST.LOCAL for example.

Hi,

I have my first Windows 2003 DC SP2 (domain name=TEST) and I just
installed a new Windows 2008 with AD domain services and joined domain
TEST successfully. On Windows 2008 DC, I ran dcpromo and and follow
the wizard. I then chose Existing doamin and selected Add a domain
controller to an existing domain. Typed in the domain name TEST.LOCAL
and selected the domain admin account. It failed to continue and here
is the error message

----------------------------------------------------------------------
-------------------------
to install a domain controler into this active directory forest,
you
must first prepare the forest using "adprep /forestprep". The adprep
utility
is available on the windows server 2008 installation media in the
\sources\adprep folder.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
---------------------------

I then ran the adprep /forestprep on Windows 2008 and received another
message. it stated that adprep cannot run on this platform(windows
2008) because it's not an active directory domain controller.
[status/consequence] adprep stopped without making any changes. [user
actions] run adprep onn a active directory domain controller.

So, i ran it on my windows 2003 DC TEST domain and no problem. I also
ran adprep /domainprep and no problem.

I tried running the dcpromo again on Windows 2008 and still received
the same message.

did i do something wrong? Basically, I just want join Windows 2008 DC
to my existing Windows 2003 DC an dit's not working. What is needed
or steps taken to join the Windows 2003 DC?

thanks for your help

Ricky
