Print management console and filters

Since the R2 release of 2003 server you have the print management
consolen and there you have a function called custom filters I thought
it would be brilliant but I have found som drawbacks...
I have set up some filters that for example emails a handyman when the
toner is running low.
It works like a charm until I log out from the server. Then it stops
sending out email.
Do you really have to setup a computer that is always logged in to take
care of the mailing out part?
Does anyone have a better tip?
