Re: Sharing a network folder properly

Tech Tip: Click here to run a free scan for Windows Errors and optimize PC performance

Very easy Mike.

1. set the SHARE permissions to "Users" to FULL=Everyone.
2. Set the NTFS security for "Users" to Authenticates Users to "List". This
will allow the to browse the Users directory.
3. For each sub folder i.e. \\Users\UserA you need to turn off Inheritance
and select "copy" the permissions. Remove any and all accounts you do not
want and add the assigned User and give them Modify access.

Hi,

I've read some conflicting information about the proper way to share a
network folder, and thought I would ask here.

We have a shared folder on a Windows 2003 server that serves as a "users"
folder, everyone in the agency has a named folder beneath the "users"
folder.
Our financial folks want to restrict access to their folders to only
themselves. So, I would like to set up permissions on their folders for
only
the four of them to be able to access.
I want to say all I have to do is right click on their folder, go to
properties, and under the security tab, remove access to all users, and
add
access to the people who might need it. Does that make sense, or is there
more to it than that? I also want to retain administrator access as well.
I
don't want to mess up the permissions on any of the folders. Any advice
would be appreciated!

Mike
