Hello David,

See here about AD database(also expand th + in the left pane to see all):
http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc783992.aspx

Normally you have nothing to do with the database, it defragments
automatically (12 hours). During this it will NOT free up the unused disk
space. For freeing up space in case the database file will grow and your
disk becomes to small you have to run an offline defragmentation.

No I didn't even know that the agent existed. I just requested a
quote on it and will be looking into it. Is there any type of
database maintenance I should do? Maybe something to purge old data
and check consistency.

Thanks,

Dave

Hello David,

Do a regulary run from the support tools "dcdiag /v", "netdiag /v"
and "repadmin /showrepl" to check for errors. For restoring single
objects a system state backup is useful. But i assume you have the BE
AD agent installed?

Hello All,

I am trying to find information on what type of maintenance should
be performed on our AD. Our AD domain has been up and running for 6
years and has gone through many changes during the years including
migration from Win 2000 to Win 2003 and the addition of Exchange
2007. Our AD is a crucial part of our network and I would like to
know what good housekeeping steps I should perform on it and how
often to keep it healthy. Are there any other backups I should
perform on it other then our Symantec Backup Exec full back up of
our 2 domain controllers. Thanks in advance!

Dave
