Installing W2K3 SP2 on application servers such as SQL and MOSS

Should we stop those application services first, and then install SP2? Sorry
if seems dumb Q but I have not come across any material that does say to stop
such services, and I would think you *would* want to stop such services.
Also, SP2 Readme says use MS Update to install SP2 if you have installed
services such as .Net 2.0 in order to assure these services work properly.
That does not make sense -- what about the full download posted on TechNet,
for example, why would that not work just as well.
