Re: Using Office 2007 with redirected folders

Regarding the Administator account, I have not set up a specific OU, because
my domain is so small. So by default, the domain is the only OU. Should I
create an explicit OU under the domain and move the non-admin users to it,
and then set up GPO for that OU?

In response to your questions:

What do you see in your event logs?
I changed the Word Option settings back to the UNC path and attempted to
save a new document. My examination of the Application Log showed the
following error:

Type: Error
Source: Microsoft Office 12
Category: None
Event: 1000
User: N/A

The Microsift Office Diagnostics log showed the following events in order of
occurrence: 201; 213; 205; 999.

The Microsoft Office Sessions Log showed an Event of 7001

What about the net use command?
My login name is "tthompson". Net use returns the following:

Status: OK
Local: H:
Remote: \\Server\Users\tthompson
Network: Microsoft Windows Network

This appears to be working okay

What about the rsop.msc ?

There are 5 nodes under User Configuration|Windows Settings|Folder
Redirection. The five nodes are: 1. Application Data; 2. Desktop; 3. My
Document; 4. My Pictures; 5. Start Menu.

The first three show:
Precedence: (1)<Folder Name>
Redirected Path: \\server\users\tthompson\<folder name>
Group: Everyone
GPO: Redirect Folders
Setting: Basic
Exclusive: Yes
Move: Yes
Policiy Removal: Leave in Existing Location

My Pictures is located in the My Documents folder.

Start Menu is:

Precedence: (1)Start Menu
Redirected Path: C:\Documents and Settings\tthompson.CARTERHOOKS\start menu
Group: Everyone
GPO: Redirect Folders
Setting: Basic
Exclusive: No
Move: No
Policiy Removal: Leave in Existing Location

Thanks in advance for your help.

Don't....you shouldn't apply that GPO at an OU that includes your domain
admin account.

There is not problem with saving files from other programs into the
redirected folders for Administrators and non-Administrators.

I did find a work around, but I don't know why it works. I mapped
the home folder, which is where the redirected files are located, to
drive H:. I went into the Word Options|Save and replaced
"\\server\users\%UserName% with "H:\My Documents" in default file
location field. Word apparently cannot handle a UNC. Does this seem
normal and is there something that I should do?

Odd, because Word can handle a UNC path just fine....you don't need a mapped
drive for this at all.

Again:

What do you see in your event logs?
What about the net use command?
What about the rsop.msc ?

Thanks in advance.

Am using redirected folders and roaming profiles for our Win 2003
domain and Office 2007 running on Win XP SP2 clients. My Documents
is redirected to the share \\Server\Users\%username%\My Documents.
The Open File dialog opens and immediately closes when I press Ctrl
+ O in Word and Excel; both crash when I attempt to save a new
document. Other programs do not exhibit this behavior and I do not
have the problems with Office when I am logged on as Administrator.
How can I fix this problem?

Since you say you're using roaming profiles, note that you should
also be redirecting Application Data (and ideally also Desktop). I'm
presuming your admin account does not use a roaming profile, folder
redirection, or login script (you definitely want to keep admin
accounts *vanilla*).

While logged in as a user:

Check the event logs & the output of an rsop.msc

Open a command prompt and type
net use
to see if you have any disconnected or unavailable shares/drives

Make sure you can open \\Server\Users\%username%\My Documents - and
open and save files therein
