Hi,
I am still completly stuck.
The only thing that is differnet in all the IPconfigs that I have checked on
computers that do connect and those that don't is 'IP Routing Enabled' is YES
on the computers that connect and no on the 30 that do not it is no. So I
have changed the setting in regedit on one of the laptops and rebooted but
although it now says yes I still can't get online.

Hi Meinholf,.
Yes that all makes sense to me. Thanks for that. Now, why don't my clients
connect when I have the settings as you describe below? But the Ping works
fine?

Hello Leon,
All machines, servers and workstations have to know/use the internal DNS
server in a domain environment and need a Default gateway if you like to
have internet access with them. Not only the server. The router needs an
ip address with one site to your internal network, in your case x.x.x.254
and one site to the internet, that you can only see in the router itself.
Because your clients have to reach the domain resources, shares logn
servers etc. they need internal configuration with only you 192.x.x.x
network. If they will go to the internet the DNS server has to know the
way to the internet, which you have to configure with the Forwarder to an
external DNS server, in your case the ISP's DNS. So, if the clients tries
to connect to a internet address from a webpage, it will aks your internal
DNS server, which can not provide this information, but it has the
information where to ask for, the Forwarder. And so it will use the
default gateway(router), the only EXIT from the internal network, to get
the answer where to find it.

Hi,
I asked that question because you this bit on your post
but I must have got confused. I think you were just explaining thatAlso for the clients you have to configure the internal Domain DNS
server x.x.x.203 and the Default gateway the router x.x.x.254
the Domain DNS and the router needed configuring to allow for Client
to access?
What is it that is causing the ability to Ping an address but not view
it with IE? Is that the DNS settings or the WIN settings?
There couldn't be any settings corrupted since I have have uninstalled
Webmarshal and taken the Firebox out of the setup could there?
Cheers

Am I not able to have the clients Obtain an IP address automaticallyWith DHCP the clients will automatically get the IP address, DNS
and Obtain DNS server address automatically? They have been doing
that for the last 2 years?
server and Default gateway or what did you mean with this question?
I will set up the server to do the DHCP job and the router to Route.Yes.
Can I just confirm that for the minimum scope options you mention.
DG is the Router (192.168.0.254)DNS server is the server
(192.168.0.203) and so is Wins?
Why would the email server connect without any problems but when IWould be nice to see the ipconfig /all from the server, that's the
copy those email server settings excatly to a client (except for
it's own IP of course) that client will not connect to the internet
but I can still Ping everywhere from the client? I am still baffled
because I am sure throught the day today I have had the settings
correct a number of times on the server but still no joy!
reason for my question about posting the ipconfig /all from all
server's and one client to compare. Without seeing, it is really
heavy to find out.

Hello Leon,
Also for the clients you have to configure the internal Domain DNS
server x.x.x.203 and the Default gateway the router x.x.x.254
BTW, i would really recommend to use the server DHCP and not the
routers DHCP. Just use the router for doing it's real job, ROUTING.
Minimum scope options are Default gateway, DNS server, WINS server
in your case.

Hi,
I am not in the office anymore but from memory the client pc's
default
gateway, dhcp and dns servers are all 192.168.0.254
I will be back in the office first thing in the morning (UK time)
but
was
hoping to know what the problem was before I get there.

Hello Meinolf Weber,
A Forwarders address is only your ISP's DNS not your internal
addresses like 192.168.x.x If they are also in the Forwarders
list remove them there. And please post also the ipconfig from
the other machines.

Hi Meinolf,
I still can't get online. Do you have any other suggestions
that
might
work.
I have also got a mailserver that has the ip address manually
installed as
default gateway 192.168.0.254 and the prefered DNS as
192.168.0.203.
This
connects to the server and internet just fine.
I have also tried replicating all the IP settings on a laptop
except
for the
192.168.0.205 but this will not connect.
Iam tottaly stuck!

Hello Leon,
Remove the DG address from the DNS first and then use the
real server address instead of the loopback address.

Hi,
I have Windows server 2003 with about 40 clients attached.
I
did
have
Webmarshal 3.5 and a firebox connected but this was causing
loads
of
problems
so I have unintalled Webmarshal and taken the firebox from
the
system.
I have
given the router DHCP ability and taken it from the server.
I am now able to access the internet from the server
without
any
problems but all of the clients just get 'this page can not
be
displayed' message. I am able to ping the site from the
clients
computer though.
We have a static IP address
The router is 192.168.0.254
The server is 192.168.0.203
the ipconfig /all on the server is.

but
I
don't want to confuse matters with that one.
Please help me as I have spent hours trying to get this
sorted
and
am not getting anywhere but I am sure it is a minor change
needed.
Thanks in advance
