the netbios name of the domain isn't a host per se. depending on how you
are going after this to test things, it can either be seen as a dfs endpoint
(e.g. open windows explorer and type \\<netbios name of domain>\sysvol) or
in the land of WINS who might be responsible for the domain/workgroup name
so browsing for resources works via my network places.
if you need to ping the name of the domain, use its fqdn. (e.g. if the
domain was named contoso.local, then you ping contoso.local)

hey
I've got a simple network at home, consistig of a winXPpro (sp2) and
Windows Server 2003 Enterprise (180-days evaluation)
I've just performed a fresh installation of win2k3 and promoted this
computer as domain controller.
When I promoted this machine to domain controller I choose the standard
values the wizard suggested.....
Each computer can ping each other using their netbios name
the problem is that on the win2k3 machine I cannot ping the domain using
it's netbios name...
(It doesn't work from the winXP machine either)
firewall is turned off on both machines
any suggestions why pdc cannot ping domain name using netbios name
.
