We would like to replace the main DC with a new computer with the same
name. This would keep file share paths and DNS entries the same for
client
Note: There is a another DC in this site. There is also a DC in
another site connected through a VLAN over the Internet.
Does the process I have below sound like it will work.
Process
FIRST: CREATE A BACKUP FROM ALL IMPORTANT DATA AND THE SYSTEM STATE FROM THE MACHINE
Run replmon, dcdiag and netdiag for errors. Is some other application installed?
-transfer main FSMO roles to another DC
do not forget the Global catalog. What about DNS/DHCP?
-demote DC
give time for replication after demoting and check with replmon, dcdiag and netdiag for errors
-name new computer same name as original main DC
same operating system or newer version?
-install active directory on new server
-move main FSMO roles back to DC
.
