Note - the last Post did not solve the problem totally

1. - Server Could not Boot Up - after noticing that the pagefile was on the
wrong Hard disk, when I changed it from Drive-2 to Drive-1 which requires a
restart / shutdown

2 - Final Solution - boot Serv 2003 CD, do a - Repair of the Existing
Installation and after 2 weeks no problems at all.

- My Analysis of the Problem - Dual Boot PCs in previous problems with the
Boot Parition have required a Boot CD either doing a Repair / Bootcfg /scan
Windows installtions, and the last resort the repair process.

- Windows Server 2003 Security probably stores the Boot Drive hardware ID
of some sort to prevent unauthorized access to the server by replacing the
Boot drive and accessing sensitive data on the server on the 2nd drive.

- Product ID - cmd prompt - systeminfo
Everytime I initiate the repair OS install process using the same OS CD, the
Product ID changes regardless of whether the Boot partition hard disk is the
same one or not.

- NTLDR & NTDETECT file date changes to day of Repair Install

- Downside of Repair Process - reinstall all Windows OS Updates, Service
Pack-2 first to reduce time, Internet Explorer Version reverts back to IE6 &
must also be updated.

- An System Backup Restore probably would not work to fix the Boot Parition
problem.

- RESPONSES TO YOUR VALUED SUGGESTIONS:

1. - You might have an issue with power management and the new drive.
Verify the write methods set for the hard drive in the system bios and back
them up to a more conservative setting to see if it helps.

- ANSWER – checked all settings for this Intel Motherboard Bios just to make
sure and did not find any settings of the sort you mentioned. The Intel Bios
has very few adjustments unlike Clone PC brands using Award Bios.

- the new drive is a Seagate BARRACUDA MODEL - ST3200822A - [7200RPM] which
is under warranty until 2009, there are no Power Management settings
available. What I’m saying is this is a far new and better HD than the 80gig
Seagate it replaced which had no problems.

2. - If the drives are set to auto-select for the cabling try setting them
explicitly to master/slave settings.
- ANSWER – Master / Slave is my configuration for both HDs cabling.

3. - Check if there is a newer bios available for the servers mainboard, the
old
firmware may have had bugs in the support of the larger sized IDE drive.

- ANSWER – Motherboard is an Intel 845BG which is fairly old but has a
2.4ghz Intel CPU & 2gig RAM that runs fast. I upgraded the BIOS many times
over the years, I stopped checking around 2+ years ago.
- the other HD the server boots from is 120gig and have had it for around 4
years without any problems.


4. - Check if the mainboard manufacturer has newer IDE controller drivers and
check the DMA settings of the drives.

- DMA settings are set by Bios Automatically and the only information is the
Ultra DMA Mode 5. As I said the Intel Bios does not allow you to try
anything adventurous LOL.

- PROBLEM - started when I replaced the master IDE HD from an 80gig HD to
a
200gb. Used an External USB HD kit + Seagate Maxblast-5 [USB support] for
Cloning.

- PC SETUP INFO - Dual boot setup, 2 HDs - Server O/S on 2nd HD. On the
1st HD [the cloned one] resides a small DOS boot partition where the
boot.ini
is located and 1 install of Win XP Pro & on the 2nd HD is another Win XP
Pro
OS and Server 2003 on different partitions.

The 2 Win XPs boot and shutdown fine. Serv 2003 also boots fine but
cannot
shutdown.

- Current Problems:
- Windows Updates requiring reboots may not be getting installed.
- Recently, after hitting the reset button when shutting the server, the
Win
XP on the 2nd HD crashed for the first time after years [blue screen] and
continued crashing until I did a -Last known good config fixed and it's
been
fine for over a week.

- ATTEMPTED FIXES - all Failed
- Chkdsk DOS boot partition, Server - no errors
- Recovery Console - Fix MBR, Fixboot
- recorded all paritions + drive letters before & after cloning, changed
all
Drive letters after cloning to previous settings.
- checked all Boot.ini entries
- enabled memory.dmp - no file created
- Dr. Watson log - no information
- Event log - nothing
- installed User Profile Hive Cleanup Service

Web searches + Microsoft support - zilch???

Any ideas???
