Hello all, My AD Environment has a file server running windows
2003.
I have 900 users connected throughout the infrastructure. Our Novell
server has recently died, so im mapping users to a new server for
file
share. 200 users have been sucsessful remapped but, 2 of them. I am
at a loss of whats going on. Same subnet, same permissions, same
building, I can map the drive, but cannot access it. However,
before
the mapped drive is complete, I can run the share from RUN on these
2
workstations. I can access and make changes as I have granted rights
to these users.
Anyone have any ideas or has anyone seen this before?
Thanks in advance
I am confused by your post. Here are the reasons:
a) You write "200 users have been sucsessful remapped". I thought
that one maps shares, not users?
b) You write "I can map the drive, but cannot access it". What
happens when you try?
c) You write "before the mapped drive is complete". I do not
understand what this means.
d) You write "I can run the share from RUN". I do not understand
this either.
e) You write "I can access and make changes as I have granted rights
to these users." Access what? Shares? Make what changes?
When logged on as an administrator or a user?
You may have to reword your post so that it becomes clear to
an outsider what exactly you do. Remember that we cannot
see your machines!
I apologise for coming across so vague (that's usually not my end
result)
Ok so here is a combination of the answers to your questions along
with explaining the problem again.
Answers: I have a total of 900 users that all access mapped drives on
Novell. The Novell Server has failed, and I have a mirrored copy
running on a 2003 server. 200 users, I have remapped to the new or
mirrored server successfully. I.e. 200 users = P:\ (for Production).
2 users, located on the same subnet, same building, OS and all that
good stuff, cannot access the drive. By not accessing the drive I
mean. The mapped drive is in My Computer, but when initiated it says
access is denied. These users have full rights and permissions to the
share. Now, before I mapped the drive, I clicked on start, Run, and
typed in the share name. I could access the server, files, make
changes etc. I copied and pasted the string in the Run box, and
mapped the drive...Fine. Now I double click the P:\ = Access is
denied.
Bottom line is:
Start Run \\sharename\folder$ =Successful
Mapped Drive to P:\ = Unsuccessful but only for 2 users
Thanks for your help by the way
This makes it a little clearer. Next questions:
- Are these accounts local accounts or domain accounts?
- What happens when the problem users do the same thing
on a different machine while logged on under their own
account?
- What happens when other users do the same thing
on the machines belonging to the problem users, again
while logged on under their own individual accounts?
- Have you tried deleting & recreating the accounts
belonging to the problem users?- Hide quoted text -
- Show quoted text -
- Im not sure exactly what you mean, however when each user logs onto
the domain, a local profile is created.
What happens when the problem users do the same thing
on a different machine while logged on under their own
account?- I will try this to get a definite idea of what the answer is to
that. I didnt try these questions since everything was going fine with
all the others. And by the way No is the answer to the 2 problem users
being the last to join the share. i.e. They are not user 199 and 200.
FYI, one was in the first 20, and the other 150ish
Have you tried deleting & recreating the account belonging to the
problem users?-
- Yes I have removed the problematic workstations from the domain and
rejoined them. This didnt fix the problem
I am going to try the suggestions you have made through your questions
and will reply shortly.
Thank you for your prompt help
We're back in the land of confusion. Here is an extract from your
previous reply:
=============
Have you tried deleting & recreating the account belonging to the=============
problem users?-
- Yes I have removed the problematic workstations from the domain and
rejoined them. This didnt fix the problem
But initially you wrote: "200 users have been sucsessful remapped but,
2 of them."
If you wish to continue with this discussion then you must be
crystal clear: Is it users that you have a problem with or is it
workstations? The two terms are not interchangeable!
