I ahve to ask you this question. Were you having that cpu spike with
"wmiprvse" on your server or your work stations? I had a workstation
wonnected to the domian and suuddenly the cpu was dominated by it along with
searchindexer.
I connected another machine and got the same result, 100% cpu utilization
(this time with "srvhost" ALL OF THE TIME.
My server is running cool at less than 11%.
Please share your thoughts. Thanks!

So to answer my own question, the problem (in my case) was related to the
Windows provided "Hardware Management" component (Add or Remove
Programs -> Add/Remove Windows Components -> Management and Monitoring
Tools -> Hardware Management). Once I removed this component, the CPU
spiking problem went away. The root problem was with the "Event
Collector" service (apparently installed with the component) - simply
stopping this service will also fix the problem.
Although I don't have time to investigate it further, I'm wondering if the
problem is further complicated by an error logged in the Application log
by the WS-Management service (also seemingly installed by the Hardware
Management component) that complained "The WS-Management service is not
listening for HTTPS requests since it failed to listen on at least one
address and port. Please check the service configuration.". It might be
related; it might not be, but seeing as I've already spent way too much
time on this problem, I'll move onto something else and get back to it
when I have a chance.

Did you ever get this problem resolved? I noticed that a potential
solution was to obtain the hotfix mentioned in KB932494, but the symptoms
mentioned in that KB don't match with what I'm seeing. Part of my
troubleshooting steps was to disable the Windows Automatic Update Service
and there is no effect on the CPU spikes I'm seeing - I'm reasonably sure
this problem is not related to the update service.
My system role configuration, symptoms, and troubleshooting steps are
pretty much in line with what you have listed except the CPU will stay
idle for about 5 seconds before spiking for about 2-5 seconds. As you
discovered, stopping and disabling WMI fixed the issue. If I kept WMI
disabled for about a minute and then restarted it, the problem went away.
This leads me to believe that there is some component on the system (Dell
PowerEdge 2850) that's polling WMI every few seconds. Once WMI is no
longer available, whatever is polling the service detects that WMI is no
longer available and stops polling.
I'm using Process Monitor and a few other tools in an attempt to track
down the source of the issue, but I'm not having much luck (all I can see
is some threads being spawned, running for a few seconds and then
exiting). Did you resolve this problem resolved or is it still an issue?

I have a Windows 2K3 R2 SP2 Server fully patched. It is an Active
Directory
controller and file & print server. It is a brand new server with a
