You should look at MS SCOM 2007, that will analyze eventlog, correlate events, monitor sql & co..
If a rule of thumbs would exist, everybody would use it ;)

Howdy!
I already know about Patch-Day form Microsoft. I'm more looking for a
schedule for optimization/preventative maintenance. System Defrags,
Hard Disk Error-Checking, Optimization of Data Bases (Sql and others),
hard drive clearing, etc...
In addition to all of that, how often we should physically clear out
areas, dust, what-not, check power cables for over-heating, breakers,
general maintenance stuff. Right now we have a tendency to plug it in
and never check it again. I want to get us away from that.
That's more of what I'm looking for, but thanks for the idea!

You would keep an eye on the second Tuesday of every month, this is the
Microsoft patch day.
It's not so much about tools, but feeding them with informations.
How many servers do you have ?
You may use Exchange public folders (calendars...) or even sharepoint if you
already got one
Of course, Microsoft SCOM 2007 would be just great on monitoring your
servers :)
