Re: Standard 2003 4GB RAM barrier

Tech Tip: Click here to run a free scan for Windows Errors and optimize PC performance

Matthieu;

I'm waiting for the media to arrive.
I need to install the server in a hurry. Can I install the trial version
then upgrade to licensed version later?

Thanks

Bill

Yes, you license is valid for 64 bits:

http://www.microsoft.com/servers/64bit/faqs.mspx
Volume licensing customers are free to exchange their 32-bit version of
Windows for the x64 version at any time, using their media kits.
Other customers should contact their OEM or regular fulfillment channels.
They may be able to assist you with media.

Mathieu;

I can take out 8GB to use elsewhere. Still, the point is to cross the 4GB
barrier.
Still need answer for this question, please:

Also, where can I get the 64-bit? If I download the trial version, can I
use my open license ID to make it permanent?

Thanks

Bill

SQL 2005 exist in 64 bits, so it will clearly boost on it.
IIS is part of the system, so it would be 64 bits (to be confirmed).

Are you sure of being able to use so much memory ?
I would rather put two smaller server

I have 16GB in the server and would like to take advantage of it.
Will run IIS 6.0/7.0, sql2005, either 32 or 64-bit if necessary.

Some on the web-based apps are developed using .NET, and I hope that
would run on both platform.
I have only CD for 32-bit. I need to know where I can download the
64-bit standard version

Thanks

Bill

Hello,

What are you going to run onto ?
32 bits application can run on 64 bits through the WOW64, normally
without notice.
Which application do you expect to use the 16G of ram ? SQL ?

Check if your application exist in 64 bits version, which would be the
best.

I think 32 bits & 64 bits version are the same price, but you would
have to check.

Are your CPU 64bits enabled (EMT64 for example) ?

Is ther any draw back?

Also, where can I het the 64-bit? If I download the trial version,
can I use my open license ID to make it permanent?

unfortunately ... no

1) you need enterprise for start
2) enabale the /PAE boot switch (probably in combination with the
/3GB
switch)
3) AND (!!) your application(s) need to be AWE compatible

... then you can use all of your 16GB Ram

HTH,
Edwin.
