shared printers bad

Tech-Archive recommends: Repair Windows Errors & Optimize Windows Performance

Why inflict pain on a server just to share printers? Put your printers on the network and use TCP/IP printing. Yes, it's harder to setup, because you cannot just connect to them but your network will love it.

I had a customer who thought it was a good idea to move their shared printer from the server to a SAN. The printer also had issues shared on a workstation. We added a JetDirect card, put it on the network, set the wks to print via TCP/IP and the issues have gone away and printing is fast, without the need to impact any other server/wks on the network.

Their issues were you could connect but not print. Firewalls were also not an issue.
