Re: Don't understand disk quotas

Its hard to answer that without knowing why they setup the quotas
in the first place. It may be that there is not a lot of storage space
on the server, so based on server applications needs, system needs,
logging, etc... The consultant may have decided to limit the amount of
space the users can use up on the server and divided the amount of
space betweent them giving them all a fair slice of the pie without
having to worry about the users using up all available space on the
server - effectivly shutting it down. Maybe its dues to the capactiy
of the backup system (assuming you have one), it may be that the
consultant is trying to keep the amount of space to be backed up small
enough to fit an a single tape. With out the quotes keeping the users
space limited, they could cause the backup to push over to two tape
and mess up the backup scheme.
Right off hand, I don't remember if you can set the quote space per
user or not. I would think you can, I'de have to research this but
right now I can't. I would suggest to these users to go through their
server based user folders and/or My Documents (if their redirected to
server storage) and any other shared server folders where they have
put stuff and have them clear out stuff they don't need to open up
more space within their quota restrictions. If they can't open enough,
then maybe see if you could temporarily expand their individual quota
space (again if this can be done per user). OHHH, and just as a double
check - make sure there is enough open space on the server to even
allow them to have more storage, the server could be running low in
total space as well. Probably not though. If the consultant setup the
quotas smart, they should keep the users from running the server down
on space it needs.
Anyway, hope this helps. Maybe someone else can let you know if
quota space can be set different per user.

Actually, I do understand what they ARE. I do understand that the quotas are

I am the IT "second in command". We have a consultant who handles the heavy
lifting, and I manage things in between. I've made a couple of attempts to
contact him, but I seem to remember that he was going out of town this week.
I have two users who are getting messages that they are running out of disk
space, and that our network drive is full. Apparently, the IT guy set disk
quotas for almost everyone when he rebuilt our server. I can see how to
disable the quotas, but I'm not sure if that's a good idea or not - I don't
know what purpose they serve. I don't know if I'm going to screw something
up. I just know that I have two users who can't get their work done...
Does anyone have any suggestions, advice, instruction, education they could
share with me?
Thank you.
