Re: WINS, NETBIOS & DNS

Tech-Archive recommends: Fix windows errors by optimizing your registry

Dear Herb,

I could have gone into details. What I have said is mostly correct - I just
did not want to write a lot of technical stuff.
Yes NetBT is a default of the Windows TCP/IP stack unless DHCP disables
NetBIOS over TCP/IP.
I assumed a single subnet - true.

I agree with what you are saying. I plead guilty to over-simplifying. ;-)
Like, I didn't try and talk OP into installing NetBEUI ;-) I also
encouraged OP to read up on all this as its a good thing. My test Longhorn
B3 Virtual server Active Directory domains use NetBIOS names of course for
lots of things in the WinNT:// namespace. Its alive and well in NT 6.0
Any mislead was not intended. After all I *DID* say:
NetBIOS names are alive and well in your 2003 / XP network though........

Have a great weekend!

Hi,

Not really. You won't need any WINS servers unless if you have any NT 4.0
or less then yes, you need these things; otherwise don't worry about it
too much.

The above is incorrect but a common (set of) misunderstanding(s).

IF you wish a variety of legacy features to work (some in surprisingly
modern add-on products) so most people in fact do need NetBIOS
on modern Windows Server networks.

WINS sever is only needed IF you have multiple
subnets (i.e., internal routers) AND if you need NetBIOS so that
part is misleading as well.

NetBT or NetBIOS over TCP traffic will "just happen" if its needed, so no
setup required.

It is the default -- which is why more people don't realize they need it
still despite the bad information out there.

WINS Server however will never happen automatically.

NetBIOS names are alive and well in your 2003 / XP network though. Plus
some resource kit tools from MS actually call NetBIOS name resolution
before DNS! But it will happen automatically - so, again, nothing to
configure. Have a play with the nbtstat command for fun.
Keep reading! That knowledge can be very handy.
