Re: Server migration windows 2003 servers

Tech-Archive recommends: Repair Windows Errors & Optimize Windows Performance

Soory about mis posting. got this post confused with another one. However
the answer is the same with xcopy you can maintain NTFS permissions. I
personally would try some free for data transferring. Or you can restore
from tape.

No issues. It is actually one of the methods he suggests for transferring
data.

what about moving the data with robocopy
any issues using this to keep all security permissions the same on each
folder

Build your new server first. Fully patch it with the latest updates. Do
not
apply W2K3 SP2 as of yet. Many of us are waiting and holding off due to
the
many issues and problems posted here in this NG. Run DCPROMO and make it
a
DC and secondary DNS server. Run NTDSUTIL and transfer the FSMO Roles
from
server1 to the new server. Your new server should now be the Main DC
holding
all roles and AD information. Now you can do what you want with the
other
servers but my recommendation would be to keep server1 as a secondary
DC.
Also I would probably hold off on applying W2K3 SP1 until my server is
completetly done loading all apps and data over. Smooth and painless.

I am currently running 3 PIII 700 servers with active directory
MY plan is to Migrate all of these to 1 powerful redundant server
my question is what is the best way to go about this,

server 1 handles all roles, and contains all user and department
directories
server 2 handles all apps (data only, no apps run from the server)
directories
server 3 handles all tech files and the backups

I think it should be an easy migration, I have downloaded several
tools
from microsoft File Server Migration tools and Active Directory tools,
but I
havent started yet, what should I look for and what do I need? to make
this
go smooth and painless

thanks
