Re: windows not fully loading due to roaming profile??

Tech-Archive recommends: Fix windows errors by optimizing your registry

I don't think the sizes are too big. The biggest one is around 15 MB. Most
are 9 MB or less.

The problem started first on my pc, but nobody else had this problem. Many
moved into a new building with new pcs and this is when the problem started
to happen to more users.

I think it is more likely a file is corrupt or as you suggest the
NTUSER.DAT. When I removed the roaming profile from my pc, I still
experienced the same problem, but I still would have the NTUSER.DAT file on
my pc.

Is there something I can try to do to fix this?

Herb,

I looked at the task manager when the desktop didn't come up and Windows
Explorer was missing. I don't know how to start windows explorer from the
task manager.

Leftmost menu: File->New Task(Run...) then type:

Explorer

Or type: CMD

Once a command prompt is running you can use TaskList, TaskKill,
type Explorer, or use any other command tools even if the GUI (Explorer)
won't start.

There is pleanty of disk space on the server and hard drive.

Is there something in the roaming profile that is causing it or isn't it
related?

Could be. What if the Roadming Profile had 20 Gig of files? Could
be a long time before it was "ready".

The Profile NTUser.dat file could be corrupted (it's the User REGISTRY
basically) or just TOO BIG.

The "Too Big" case used to happen a LOT under NT4 but I haven't
see this in years even though I have (maybe) heard about it occasionally
on 2000+.

The Holding "SHIFT" at logon will also eliminate many/most anything
that is being run on Startup (Logon really).

If you can get to the Task Manager you should be able to start
specific programs -- perhaps NOT "Windows Explorer" however.

Some things to try: Use TaskMgr to start Explorer -- if it works
you are ahead of the game.

Use it to start a Cmd prompt which will let you do TaskList and
TaskKill to kill Explorer and then type in "EXPLORER" and
restart it.

You might try logging on while holding SHIFT (press Ok with SHIFT)
and bypass the Startup programs in case one of those is the problem.

Look for enough space on the disk and delete some junk if the disk is
full.
