So...I have some concerns. I am currently studying for various certs
and as I get into more detail about backing up servers, I become more
concerned about disaster recovery (more like freaked Iout!) Here's the
scene: 3 servers- 1:Exchange/File, Raid 5-3discs(i friggin' hope! all
basic discs/I assume a hdw controller is taking care of it (VERY
old)srvr2000/ex2003). 2: BES/webfilter/email filter/ install files for
office 2000 & some others-1 basic disc NO FAULT srvr2003) 3: data/app/
sql server 2 mirrored discs(again, I hope controller is doing it's
job! svr2003)
We currently use Veritas V.10 doing fulls every night (about 76G's) on
a DLT 40/80. I occasionally verify the tapes, I take them off-site
every day, I check event viewer for warnings/errors concerning
backupexec. Occasionally, I re-name a data file and restore it from
tape to make sure i can do it. Ocassionally, someone deletes a file
and I restore it from tape. I know JACK about ghosting. As all the
training I'm doing is microsoft based, the only mention of backups is
via microsoft based (approved) types. No mention of 3rd party
scenarios at all. All i wanna know is if there is more I *should* be
doing. I already know there is more than I *should* know. Believe me,
I am learning as fast as I can. I *think* I'm backing up more than I
should (inherited). I guess what I'm asking is-
do you guys archive old,OLD data? I've got stuff on there that's gotta
be 5 yrs old, old data from accounting programs we don't use, the
programs themselves,,, what is acceptable?
Legacy stuff is usually backed up to two set of DVDs, then
archived in line with the statutory requirements that apply to
accounting data in your country.
