Hi
So users previously shared a printer connected to their own machine and now
they can't?
Well that's because domain users don't have LOCAL administrative rights to
the machine they are logged into.
How many printers are we talking about? How many users in your environment?
there are a couple of ways of doing this I can think of.
1. Give users administrative access
2. Enable Printer and File Sharing in a Group Policy Object
I'd advise against giving a user admin rights to the computer, so that
leaves number 2 see the link below for more info on this.
http://technet2.microsoft.com/WindowsServer/en/library/0cf7e1a7-f7a2-49f9-8fee-730d9d1ea2071033.mspx?mfr=true
Group Policy is VERY powerful and can wreak havoc on your entwork if you set
something incorrectly so I would create a test OU with a test computer and a
test Group Policy Object to make sure that the settings you set do what you
want them to. Try not to put multiple changes in one Group Policy Object as
this becomes hard to manage later on.
Also look into utilising the Print Server built into Windows Server and
connecting the printers direct to the network (if they are networkable) to
see if this fits your needs and requirements.
This is better because then the print server processes the print job, if you
share a printer from a windows XP machine then that machine will process
every job sent to it creating a performance overhead that will affect that
users productivity (dependent on the amount of print jobs being spooled and
size and stuff)
Hope this helps.

hi,
I am beginner in the field of Networking, I am trying to convert my
organization setup from Workgroup to Domain. For this i have done the
followings,
1) Installed Windows 2003 server on a machine
2) Installed AD (create domainwww.abc.com)
3) Create OU (for each dept like I.T, HR etc)
4) Create two groups (Admin and Staff)
5) Add users in OU and relate them to a group. (users are alo member
of "Users")
*Note every thing is going with default settings.
6) Start adding user PCs on domain (users have Windows XP installed)
Here i am facing some problems,
1) Users previously sharing there printer are not unable to share it
now.
2) Some users are facing problem to write data on there local drives.
Would you please suggest me what to do ?
Waitng....
Any body here ???
