creating custom event logs

hi all

we're running into a situation where, on occasion, some of our email
accounts become compromised and our server's outbox fills with 2500+
outbound spam messages. this kills the server's ability to send legitimate
email and we have to wait to notice this before we can fix it. we'd like to
add an event so that when the number of files in the outbox exceeds X, an
event is added to the event log which is then emailed to us (through a
different mail server).

short of writing an app to monitor the folder, is there a simple way to pull
this off?
