Administrator password incorrect?!?

I have a strange problem with one of our servers where it was giving
me the "Enter your credentials" message repeatedly when logged on as
administrator. I could not change the password using CTRL-ALT-DEL
since I was getting the Incorrect Password message, even though I just
changed it!
If I change the password using another admin account or the "net user
administrator newpassword" command, I can log in only once with that
password, after that I get the incorrect password deal all over
again!!!
Is there a way to "refresh" the admin account or clear up whatever is
mucked up, or am I missing something?
This server is the only DC on the domain and has antivirus and backup
software running on it. I just patched it with SP2 and the problem
persists.
Thanks in advance..
Ray!
