I'm stumped. The evt logs aren't any help. When I attempt either a domain
or
local machine logon to a Server 2003 SP1 file server, there appears to be
a
logon and then an immediate logoff back to the logon prompt. It never gets
to
the desktop. There is a brief period where I can see the "applying your
settings" and then "logging off." This also happens when I try to connect
via
Remote Desktop. In other respects, the server appears to be serving files
OK
and I can open a remote computer management snap-in from an MMC on another
server or workstation. Any ideas?

Further to Herb's detailed reply: this type of problem is
often caused by the file userinit.exe not being where it
should be, either because of a change in the system drive
letter, because the file is missing or because its registry
reference is incorrect. Try this for starters:
- Start a Command Prompt on a networked PC.
- Type this command: psexec \\YourServer cmd
You can get psexec.exe from www.sysinternals.com
- Type this command:
set system
Is the system drive letter correct?

You should also refer to the item "Windows login", posted here
five days ago. It contains an extensive discussion on the same subject.
