I want to add a mirrored drive to a windows 2003 server (scsi drive)
I asume I just use the software from Microsoft this seems easy enough
(?)
What I dont know about is if a drive fails It is my understanding that
I have to change the boot.ini to boot from the other drive. Is this
true? I want to mirror the drive and then test it out. I dont know
what changes I need to make to the boot.ini to make it work. Also I
dont understand how Im suppose to do this if the boot drive is bad. If
it fails how to I change it. OR do I just pull the drive out and move
it onto the 0 plug on the drive cable. Will this Work?
My current boot.ino looks like this.
[boot loader]
timeout=30
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS
[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP
Professional" /fastdetect /NoExecute=OptIn
Thank you

The file boot.ini controls the boot behaviour. Since you have a
software mirror, Windows won't know about the mirror at boot
time, hence boot.ini remains unchanged.
Here are a couple of links that explain mirrors:
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;113977
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/167045/EN-US/
It is a good idea to find out in advance what happens when one
of the mirror disks fails. However, if you're serious about redundancy
then you must test these things yourself. If you get a failure later on
then it's no good telling your boss "A respondent in a newsgroup
told me it should work". Unplug one disk at a time and see what
happens!
