Good Advice Danny. Thanks. Originally, this looked like a hardware problem
to us, so that was the first thing we did. We updated the BIOS on our Dell
PowerEdge servers, but the problem still persists. We haven't seen it on
any of our Pentium III servers running 2003, which is why I mentioned the
common thread of a 32-bit OS running on a 64-bit processor. Perhaps ACPI is
the culprit, but again, I can't think of a good way to test this theory.

Wouldn't hurt to see if there is an updated BIOS for this server also.

Hello,
There was a similar post on this topic back in June 29, 2006 which can
still be found here:
http://groups.google.com/group/microsoft.public.windows.server.general/msg/e979bd9a9dd7ce9d?as_umsgid=69D3C517-0FFE-44A3-99E6-1D74EADA31B6@xxxxxxxxxxxxxx
However, I saw no resolution or things to try.
We are experiencing the same situation where a Server 2003 machine will
perform Automatic Updates as scheduled. If the system requires a reboot,
it appears that a shutdown is initiated, but the server hangs in the
midst of the shutdown. Most of the services get stopped so the machine
is rendered inoperable and inaccessible, however the actual restart never
occurrs. Rather than a hard shutdown, in our case, all that is required
is keyboard or mouse input. In otherwords, if we press the Control key
or move the mouse, Windows will "wake-up"and the shutdown process will
continue. Windows will display its shutdown screens, and the reboot will
complete.
While this does not happen on all of our servers, the things that we have
seen in common are: Server 2003 (32-bit), Intel Xeon Processors (64-bit
processor), Automatic Update induced reboot.
Currently we suspect the problem may be related to: Power Settings,
Screen Saver, Keyboard Mouse I/O, but we have no way of isolating or
testing this issue. Any direction or help would be appreciated.
