Hi All,
I have tried to change the DNS servers in the 'Internet Protocol (TCP/
IP Properties' dialog box, however receive the error message 'The
combination of IP address and subnet mask in invalid. All of the bits
in the host address portion of the ip address are set to 1. Please
enter a valid combination of IP address and subnet mask'.
My default (pre-configured) settings are:
IP Address: 212.227.xx.xx
Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.255
The subnet mask above is (part of) your problem. This would means the
machine were alone on a subnet by itself, not even a default gateway
and so would never make sense.
It should likely be something like 255.255.0.0 or 255.255.255.0 or
even 255.255.240.0 but we cannot tell you unless you gives us your
real IP numbers in full AND describe your other subnets and routers.
Gateway: 10.255.255.1
The above is also wrong (for this machine) as the Default Gateway needs
to be on the SAME subnet with the client/server you are configuring.
For example with the address and mask: 212.227.16.10 mask 255.255.255.0
the default gateway would perhaps be 212.227.16.1 (or any other address
that starts with 212.227.16 (between 1 and 254, and not used by some
other machine.)
I've googled for a solution but can find anything. This seems to be
the most relevant:http://www.pcreview.co.uk/forums/
thread-215168.php . I don't understand what's wrong with the settings.
My server is running Windows 2003 web edition.
Doesn't matter the above is true for XP, 98, MACs and Linux etc. It's a dedicated server on the 1&1 network.
I don't know wat the "1&1" network would be.
The full IP address is
212.227.21.59. It came pre-configured with those settings and I
haven't had to change them until now.
What is the address of the Router (default gateway) on that SAME
network? (maybe 212.227.21.1 or some other 212.227.21.x )
A couple of days ago my server was unable to make DNS loop ups using
the preferred and alternate servers (195.20.224.99 and
195.20.224.234).
Perfectly reasonable (if they are reasonably close by) as DNS can travel
over routers.
I have tested with nslookup using other DNS servers
on the 1&1 network. No problem there. After several hours on the phone
to 1&1 support I have a list of other DNS servers but unable to change
because of the subnet mask error message.
1&1 have changed something on their network (they won't admit to it)
or the two DNS servers I have been using.
You have both your MASK and your Default Gateway address screwed
up as noted in the previous post.
Fix those and it will likely work again.

Thanks for your help Herb. I've emailed them for the correct
settings.
Why is the web server still operational with the wrong gateway? What's
caused the settings to change, if they've changed at all? I can't
believe it's been setup like this in the first place.
